Answer from @OhMyCarlisle: It never was mentioned in the books. It was never even explained that she was married before. All we are told in the Twilight saga novels is that she had a baby who died and she jumped off a cliff afterwards. Charles Evenson and her first encounter with Carlisle are no where in the books.
